Defense

“Staying Ball-side” – when in Man defense, you must stay between the ball and your man. If she attempts to cut in front, you must create contact and stop her from going where she wants to go…..period!

“Playing deny” – When your man is one pass away from the ball, positioning yourself between the ball and your man while sagging toward the key. This will allow you to jump a pass as well as assist in the interior defense.

“In help” – When your man is two passes from the ball, you must sag into the key to “help” keep others out of the key. This is VERY important to playing our style of man defense.

Offense

Ozzy – no plays, just give and go. Set good screens, roll to the basket or pop out for a shot. Look for teammates cutting to the basket or posting inside. We use this “free-flow” offense to allow the players to “play ball” rather than just running plays – we want you to read and react, take what the defense is giving you and be aggressive, driving to the basket when the opportunity arises.

C-1, Post, Fist etc. - These plays have multiple options and use a high-post set where the 4 and 5 are at the elbow and the 2 and 3 are in the low block.

1 thru 5 (vs. Zone Def.) – These plays use a traditional “house” set where the guards are on the perimeter and the 4 and 5 are in the low block.

Thumbs UP and Down – Pick-and-roll plays used vs. man defense.

Other Offensive sets includeCarolina, St. Mary’s, 4-out, 4-high, 22, 23 etc.

In-bounds: Tandem – Used vs. full-court man
31
– Used vs. full-court trap

V-cut – A cross-court cut which is essential to all inbounds plays!

Forms

Close-outs – Shuffle feet, throw palms upward, keep rear down, finish in good defensive stance.

Slides – Low and wide, rear down, good knee bend, outside hand out, inside hand low to protect against a cross-over dribble.

Triple-threat – Power foot forward, pivot foot back, ball on back hip, aggressive offensive stance.

Shooting - Power foot slightly forward, elbow in, off-hand on side of ball, use legs for power, good follow-through and rotation)
